D’Angelo Danté Russell is a well-known American professional basketball player. He is a famous player for the Golden State Warriors of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played various basketball tournaments and won the matches for his team and warriors.
In 2016, Russell missed out some matches due to the pain in his left knee when he was playing for Lakers. Russell was the second leading scorer at that time and his absence leaves a hole in his team lineup.
Knee is made up of bones, muscles, ligaments, cartilage, and tendons. These all parts work together to make the legs bend, straighten, and to swivel. A knee injury can damage one or more of these parts of the knee. Knee injuries are really common thing in athletes because sports required twisting or bending due to which force applied on the knee and if that force applied in a wrong way it can cause your knee joint to swell and also joint stiffness and pain. The knee joint can also break down over time due to a chronic condition which we all know as osteoarthritis. The breakdown of the knee tissue will eventually lead to pain, joint stiffness, and sometimes swelling in your knee joint.
There are too many options for knee injury including medicines, cortisone injections, and surgery. Athletes or any sportsman prefer the treatment which will not require long recovery period. So like several other athletes Angelo Russell chose PRP (platelet rich plasma therapy). PRP is a concentrated form of growth factors and cell mediators that have been shown to greatly promote the repair of damaged tissues.
PRP or platelet rich plasma is 100% natural and developed from the patient’s own blood. PRP heals the wound effectively. Studies indicate that platelet rich plasma has a healing effect on the body by regenerating the damaged cell or tissue in a much shorter down time and with no side effects.
The procedure was performed in Los Angeles. For the treatment, doctors or surgeons took out some of Russell’s own blood, treat it in a way to concentrate the platelets which then promote the healing and then doctors injected that concentrated plasma back into the area which Russell wanted to feel better(his left knee).
After two weeks of recovery period or rest, Russell was again able to play basketball like early and the risks of injection were negligible as PRP treatment used his own blood to heal him.
