Shoulder Injuries and Arthritis Stem Cell Therapy

Previously, when someone got joint arthritis pain, chronic shoulder or muscle tears, the only solution to relieve the pain and heal the condition was considered to be surgery. Full recovery or even partial recovery was considered to be out of question without cutting the shoulder open in an OR.

This is because the human body undergoes through a regenerative and degenerative process each day. In case of an injury, or over-usage of a ligament, muscle or tendon, the regenerative process has to the job of healing the body while the degenerative process has done the maximum damage it can. The regenerative process is responsible to heal the condition with the power of stem cells. Stem cells have the ability to transform into any kind of cell required by the body at any given time.

When the severity of the damage for a shoulder injury, surpasses the natural healing process of the body, it results in an immobilized, highly painful and weakened shoulder.

Regenerative Medicine has the power to offset this damage by encouraging the natural healing processes of the body to work faster and harder. It enhances the regenerative process of the body to repair the damaged tissues quicker and in a natural manner.

Stem Cell therapy and Platelet Rich Plasma therapy are the main procedures of Regenerative Medicine that can regenerate a chronic shoulder condition without any surgery with fast pain relief and quick recovery as compared to any other shoulder pain treatment at present.

With surgery, there are significant risks as well as lengthy and tiring rehabilitation process. That’s why it is sensible to exhaust all safer options before taking the life altering decision to go for surgery. Regenerative medicine is relatively way much safer alternative to surgery with great chances at full recovery.

In case you are going through an excruciating joint arthritis or a chronic shoulder injury, Regenerative medicine has shown promising results for various patients. While no guarantees are there, the chances of success are really good and the arthritis treatment have made many lives better.

For weekend warriors and professional athletes, regenerative presents a fast way to heal from their shoulder injuries and return to their sport faster than any other way.

Surgery vs. Regenerative Medicine

Surgery has great risks and long and painful rehabilitation afterwards. The risks for a typical shoulder surgery include:

Surgery comes with both tremendous risk and long rehabilitation periods. Risks of shoulder surgery include:

  • Blood Clots
  • Damage to an artery
  • Damage to ligaments
  • Dislocation or loosening
  • Fracture
  • Infection
  • Joint stiffness
  • Nerve damage

The risk with regenerative medicine is very little. The procedure requires only a very small incision to be made and no sutures are needed for the process. That’s why the chances of infection are less than 1%.

Regenerative Medicine Hip Surgery
Blood Clots No Possible
Dislocations No Possible
Foreign Prosthetic No Yes
Fractures No Possible
Hospital Stay No 3 - 10 days
Infection Unlikely Possible
Joint Stiffening No Possible
Lost Time at Work No # months - 1 year
Prosthetic Breakdown No Yes
Recovery Back to Normal Activities
1 - 3 Days
6 Months to a Year
Slow Process
Re-Surgery No Possible - Very Likely

The Risks

Regenerative Medicine for shoulders is all-natural and organic material from your own body containing no additives. Because PRP is derived from your own blood, there is no chance of allergic or immune reaction. Less than 1% chance of local infection.

  • 1/100 suffer nerve damage
  • 1/200 develop blood clots that travel
  • 1/50 have damage to the ligaments
  • 1/1000 suffers damage to an artrery
  • 1/500 suffer from osteolysis, when metal or plastic fragments come loose and travel into the body
  • Possibility of blood transfusion

Most patients are back to regular activities right after the procedure. Some patients experience mild soreness in the injection area for a day or two. It is recommended to refrain from demanding physical activities for 2-3 days after the procedure.

Patients cannot lift anything heavier than a cup of water for the first 4-6 weeks. Intensive Physical Therapy is required to regain range of motion. Regular physical activities like heavy lifting may be restricted long term. Pain typically last from six months to a year.

Procedure is performed under Local Anesthesia avoiding all complications from General Anesthesia.

General Anesthesia can cause mental confusion, dental trauma, croup(swelling of the windpipe), allergic reactions, wheezing, vocal cord injury, vomiting, lung infection, stroke, heart attack, and death.

Life Cycle

Pain can be improved significantly and may be permanently eliminated. Initial improvements will be seen within a few weeks, then gradually increasing as the healing process.

Shoulder replacement longevity depends on the physical activities of the individual. It is likely that patients will have to get a second surgery.

Recovery Time: Surgery vs. Regenerative Medicine

For a shoulder surgery, post surgery recovery period can be multiple days and complete healing takes six months to a year of physical therapy and painful rehabilitation. Regenerative medicine needs minimal recovery time Shoulder replacement surgery does benefit the patient but life after surgery cannot be as active and as pain free as before. Regenerative medicine heals the muscles and joint like they are new. This is because, through Platelet Rich Plasma and Stem Cells, the treated area grows healthy new tissues and repairs the degenerated ones.

Following are the Shoulder Conditions That We Treat With Regenerative Medicine
  1. Arthritis of the shoulder joint
  2. Partial Rotator Cuff Tears
  3. Glenoid Labrum Tears or Degeneration
  4. Rotator Cuff Tendonitis
  5. Recurrent Shoulder Dislocations

Types of Regenerative Medicine Procedures

There are two types of procedures that we use at our office and depending on the severity of your injury; we may implement a mixture of both to get the optimum potential for healing.

Stem Cell Therapy

For Shoulder Stem Cell therapy, we take non-controversial adult stem cells from the patient’s fat tissues or bone marrow to boost the healing process in the injured site. In the procedure, a sample of the patient’s own stem cells are drawn from their body and re-injected in the injured area. The fresh supply of stem cells quickens the healing process, repairs the damaged shoulder tissue and keeps regenerating it for up to a whole year.

Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy (PRP)

Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy is another method of Regenerative Medicine that utilizes the power of platelets in your blood that is enriched with more than 30 growth factors that can speed up the shoulder recovery. We draw a sample of the patient’s blood and place it in a centrifugation system, where the blood is processed to receive a rich concentration of PRP. Then we inject the PRP concentrate into the injured hip site to encourage the generation of new tissue and repair of the damaged ones.

Rotator Cuff Injuries

The shoulder is the most mobile of the body with an amazing ball and socket structure. Its surgery is understandably complex because of its anatomy. Due to the level of activity that these joints perform, rotator cuff injuries are very common occurrence. Every year more than 40,000 surgeries are carried out to repair the rotator cuff tears. Due to the level of its complexity, only 60% of such surgeries are successful.

The cause of this is obvious. Like any other injury, shoulder area requires to have ample amount of stem cells to heal the damaged tissues for the injured muscles, ligaments, and tendons. It is foreseeable that in a surgery of invasive nature where the whole thing is cut open and later stitched back up, there is a high likelihood of further damage result in new unhealthy scar tissue. This can further reduce the existing stem cells capability to repair the damage and heal it.

On the other hand, in regenerative medicine, the focus is on supplying an added amount of stem cells to the affected site to elicit an accelerated recovery for the injured muscles, tendons, and ligaments and a very high potential to avoid the need for surgery altogether.
