Stem cells are those from which all other cells of our body with specialized functions are develop or generated. Stem cells itself are body’s raw material. Stem cells can be generated into all other cells of body such as blood cells, brain cells, heart muscle cells or bone cells. No other cell has this ability to generate new cell types.

Sources of stem cells

Embryonic stem cells; come from those embryos that are 3 to 5 days old. They are pluripotent cells, means they have the ability to generate into more stem cells or can form any type of body cell.
Adult stem cells; these are found in bone marrow. As compared to embryonic stem cells, these cells have limited ability to give rise to various cells of the body. They can create bone or heart muscle cells.
Perinatal stem cells; these cells are found in amniotic fluid as well as umbilical cord blood.

Stem cell therapy:

Stem cell therapy replaces stem cells. When stem cells or bone marrow have been damaged or destroyed by disease, stem cell therapy comes to rescue your bone marrow.
There are two types of stem cell therapy; allogeneic transplant and autologous transplant.
In an allogeneic stem cell transplant, stem cells are removed from another person and given to you .The person who gives or donate stem cells called donor and the person who receives called as recipient.
In an autologous stem cell transplant, you provide your own stem cells.

Stem cell therapy is a long and complex process which involves 5 steps.
Doctor will assist your general level of health through tests and examinations.
Obtaining stem cells which are going to be used in the transplant, the process called as harvesting. Stem cells can be obtained either from donor or from you.
Preparing your body for transplant process.
Transplanting the stem cells.
After transplantation has been done, you will need time for your recovery.

Applications of stem cell therapy:

Stem cell therapy can used in stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease or other neurological problems. Stem cell therapy usually uses to treat cancers.
Stem cell therapy is also used to treat arthritis in the knee and other joints.
We can also use stem cell therapy in autism spectrum disorder which can be characterized by marked abnormalities in communication and social interactions.
Back pain can also treated by stem cell therapy.
Stem cell therapy restore blood-forming stem cells in people who have had theirs destroyed by the very high doses of chemotherapy or radiation therapy that are used to treat certain cancers. Since chemotherapy and lethal doses of radiations destroy the stem cells so in this case the bone marrow transplant can allow the patient to survive. Bone marrow transplant procedure involves the replacement of damaged bone marrow with healthy one by planting blood stem cells, which travel to the bone marrow where they produce new blood cells and promote growth of new marrow.
