Back on the golf course

Maurice is back on the golf course!

“When I met Dr. Zaki Anwar for the first time, I was literally stooped over and walked with a shuffle because I was in such chronic pain 100% of the time. I was about to have a very serious back surgery but was referred to Dr. Anwar and decided to see what he thought about my condition first,” Maurice told me on his last day in our office. Why was it his last day in the office? This patient that we’ve gotten to know so well over the last 6 years decided it was time to move on to the sunnier South Carolina weather with his wife.

Dr. Anwar’s recommendation included steroid injections to establish a baseline, then PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) injections along with stem cell therapy.  Within 6 months Maurice was back in the gym working out, strengthening his body, and BACK TO PLAYING GOLF (what a coincidence that he’s moving to a place where he can play golf year-round!) The best part of all this is a tie between being back to playing golf and his back surgery being off the table.

“I owe my life to Dr. Anwar” he says and having gotten his preferred life back proves to us that he really meant it. Maurice felt the staff here was not only nice and professional, but knew we had his best interest at heart because everyone went the extra mile to make sure he was comfortable and understood everything.

Regenerative Medicine is innovative- it strives to treat injury or disease by naturally repairing, restoring, and actually regenerating the damaged or diseased tissue instead of just masking the pain. Exosomes are everywhere in the human body. They are naturally produced by cells and contain a biologic message with instructions that direct the behavior of other cells.  Aging is an inevitable process, but that’s old news. (Pun intended) As cell function becomes impaired, your tissue starts to deteriorate and the instructions contained within exosomes also age and change. When a healthy mother gives birth to a healthy baby, the exosomes produced by the mesenchymal stem cells on that first day of birth contain the most potent cellular message supporting human development.

Taking the time to explain everything and how it would work was just one aspect of why Maurice says “Dr. Anwar is the most complete doctor I’ve ever met.. and as a bonus, he’s a wonderful person too!”

It’s not a goodbye since Maurice still has family in the area, so we know he’ll stop in again, and aside from looking forward to seeing his smiling face, we can hardly wait to hear how sunny and warm his days are. Maybe if we’re lucky he’ll stop in when the wind-chill is 5 below and he can really rub it in! All joking aside, we are so happy for this next chapter in his life and wish him only the best.

And a hole in one.

Stem cell banking, which utilizes cryogenically frozen stem cells, has been made possible thanks to the advancement of modern science. By banking your stem cells, you can take advantage of their regenerative capabilities. Known as “health insurance for the future,” you can be prepared for any potential medical conditions or need for medical treatment that may arise down the line. Stem cells derived from autologous (your own body’s) tissue are ideal for those looking to bank their cells. Research shows that telomeres, the protective end caps on DNA that shorten with age, are longer on your own adipose (fatty) tissue than bone marrow. This makes your fatty tissue an ideal and less painful source for preserving stem cells. Exosomes, derived from placental or umbilical cord tissue, are often recommended for older adults or those with other medical issues. However, banking your stem cells would be the best option if you have a younger and healthier body. Parents can also choose to bank tissue of their newborns, to culture expand the mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) stored in the tissue. This banking is different than cord blood because doing so can provide up to 500 million live MSCs available to their children in the future, ensuring they have access to regenerative treatments and therapies as needed or desired. The potential benefits of stem cell banking are endless. You might use your banked cells for back or arthritis pain in joints, injuries such as a torn ligament or inflamed tendon, accelerated healing of more severe fractures, or even aesthetic treatments.
